Liposuction is a great procedure that can produce impressive results in patients that desire a small to moderate amount of fat removed in almost any area of the body or limbs. It is ideal for those stubborn areas where the fat just will not go away with diet or exercise. This procedure allows the surgeon to sculpt the body to obtain a shape that reflects what you desire. It can also correct any asymmetries and achieve a better proportion to the rest of your body. This procedure works great especially for the abdomen, flanks, hips, back, upper arms, upper thighs, and neck areas. The skin above the treated areas usually retracts and tightens up, preventing sagging skin. Patients often comment on the significant improvement of contour with a rejuvenated appearance of the treated areas and an improved self-image.
Many patients ask what the difference is between dieting versus liposuction. First off, Dr. Tsai promotes the health and well-being of the body and the soul. In general, he advises eating a healthy diet and exercising which also has many added benefits other than the obvious loss of fat. With dieting, the fat cells decrease in size, but the number of fat cells stays roughly the same. This also goes for weight gain, the fat cells just increase in size. This is the reason why many diets do not work, the number of fat cells remains the same; when you get off the diet, these cells increase in size and you’re back to the beginning. With liposuction, the fat cells are physically removed and thus their number decreases. This is why liposuction has a longer-lasting effect due to the physical removal of these fat cells.
Liposuction is a safe procedure and is performed under general anesthesia (fully asleep) in the adjacent surgicenter. Depending on the regions you desire treated, it usually takes about an hour per area to complete. A specialized mixture of fluid is injected into the areas for treatment, which helps numb the region as well as decreases the amount of blood loss. A blunt cannula is then used to extract excessive fatty tissue. This is a minimally invasive procedure in that the incisions are about ½ cm each, with around 2-4 incisions in each area, depending on what part of the body is being treated. During your consultation in Beverly Hills, Dr. Tsai will present you with all the possible options in detail and work with you to individualize treatment according to your specific goals and expectations to provide you with the best possible result.
Patients return home the same day as the procedure so transportation will need to be arranged. Your first checkup will be the following day in the clinic. Bandages are removed several days after the procedure and normal daily activities can be resumed within a few days. There is usually bruising in the areas treated but this is normal and may take a week or two to fully resolve. Pain is tolerated with prescribed oral pain medication. Exercise is resumed approximately 3-4 weeks after the procedure.
