Neck lift plastic surgery, medically known as a lower rhytidectomy, is a relatively less invasive procedure. But it involves a significant recovery period which is essential for the success and longevity of the procedure results.
The surgeon will offer the patient detailed recovery instructions. The patient, on their part, should follow these guidelines closely to enjoy a brief and comfortable recovery period and accomplish desirable results.
During the initial consultation process, the patient will be able to ask the surgeon questions and express concerns on the recovery phase and downtime as well as the do’s and don’ts to be undertaken after neck lift surgery.
Board certified plastic surgeon Roger Tsai, MD provides neck lift to patients in West Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, CA , and surrounding locations.
Approximate Downtime
Most patients will require one week of downtime after neck lift cosmetic surgery. They should ask a responsible person to drive them back home after the surgery when the surgeon allows them to return home.
Working professionals should account for one week of leave from work and apply for the leave beforehand to enjoy a comfortable and relaxed recovery phase.
The surgeon may prescribe pain medications to the patient to make sure that they remain comfortable during the recovery period.
Maintaining Blood Flow
The patient should stay at home and take adequate rest during the first week after the neck surgery. However, the surgeon will instruct them to perform light activities, and brief walks within the home to maintain the blood supply to the incision areas.
The patient should wear loose-fitting and front-open clothing during the first few days. On top of this, they should avoid vigorous exercises and lifting heavy objects for the first three to four weeks until the incisions heal sufficiently. Most patients can resume their normal routine in one week after the procedure.
Checking for Infections
The post-operative swelling and bruising will gradually resolve after the neck lift surgery. However, if the patient detects any unusual signs such as constant or severe pain in the incision sites, pus in the incision areas, high fever or excessive swelling that does not subside, they should promptly reach out to the surgeon’s office.
The patient should also avoid exposing the incision sites to the contaminants as much as possible in the first few days after the procedure. In addition, they should not submerge the incision areas in water until the surgeon allows doing so.
Side Effects and Scarring
The patient will experience mild pain and soreness in the incision areas as a temporary side effect. There will also be some degree of scarring and bruising after the neck lift. But these scars will slowly fade away into thin white lines that will be barely discernible.
An expert neck lift plastic surgeon will place incisions in the natural creases of the neck or other inconspicuous areas to ensure that any future scarring remains discreet.
