An upper arm lift is a great procedure used to treat patients who complain of excessive tissue in the upper arms, sometimes known as “bat wings.”  Over time with aging or with weight loss, excessive sagging skin can result due to volume loss of the upper arm.  Many patients often complain of difficulty fitting into clothes or embarrassment when wearing a dress.  This procedure can remove extra tissue and re-contour the upper arm for an improved rejuvenated appearance.  Patient satisfaction is very high with an improved self-image and they often comment on the ability to fit into and wear clothing they enjoy.

The upper arm lift typically takes 2-3 hours to complete and is performed under general anesthesia (fully asleep) in the adjacent surgicenter.  An ellipse of excess tissue between the elbow and the armpit is removed; therefore, resulting in a longitudinal scar.  The incision is placed on the posterior medial aspect (inner part towards the back) of the arm.

With normal clothing, the scar is hidden.  In a dress, when the arms are at the side, the scar is also hidden by the body and unnoticeable, but can be slightly visible when the arm is elevated.  Drains are usually placed to prevent fluid collection within the surgical site. During your consultation, Dr. Tsai will present you with all the possible options in detail and work with you to individualize treatment according to your specific goals and expectations to provide you with the best possible result.

RECOVERY

Patients return home the same day as the procedure so transportation will need to be arranged.  Your first checkup will be the following day in clinic.  Bandages are removed several days after the procedure and drains are removed within one week.  Patients usually return to normal daily activities within 1-2 weeks.  Pain is tolerated with prescribed oral pain medication.  Exercise is resumed approximately 4-6 weeks after the procedure.

Your Upper Arm Lift (Brachioplasty) procedure will be performed in Roger Tsai, MD's medical practice located in West Hollywood.
